Requirements for Bachelor's Program

A. Academic

1. At least 12 years of education (HSC equivalent).

 

B. Language Proficiency

1. If applying for a course taught in Norwegian or for general acceptance into an institution, applicants outside of the Nordic countries must meet one of the following requirements:

a. Successfully passed 'Norwegian as a second language' from upper secondary school or

b. Successfully passed Level 3 in Norwegian at a university or

c. Successfully passed one-year study in Norwegian language and society for foreign students from a university college or

d. successfully passed test in Norwegian at higher level 'Bergenstesten' with a minimum score of 450

 

2. Where the language of instruction is English, you require IELTS band score 5.5 to 6.0 or TOEFL CBT scores 213 or iBT score 79 to 80

 

D. Course Length

1. Bachelor's Degree: Approx. 3 years of study.

 

Requirements for Master's Program

A. Academic

1. At least 15 years of education.

Expenses

A. Tuition Fees in $US

1. Generally, universities and state university colleges do not charge tuition fees. It is true for all levels, including Undergraduate, Masters & Ph.D. programmes. This also applies for foreign students. However, certain programmes/courses may have fees. Private institutions normally do charge tuition fees

2. In this case, students will have to pay semester fee of $US 51 to 101 each semester. In order to take an exam this fee will have to be paid in full.

 

B. Living & Other Expense in $US

The average university student's budget is approximately $US 1339 per month for one academic year. This amount should cover most monthly expenses such as housing, food, clothing, study material, books, transport and social activities etc.

 

Other Information

A. Medical Insurance

1. If the duration of your stay in Norway is between 3 to 12 months you should fill in a special form entitling you to health services coverage in accordance with the National Insurance Scheme.

2. Some institutions provide on campus health services. The semester card which you receive by semester registration may entitle you free medical treatment at the institution's student health services

3. This treatment usually does not apply to medicines or to medical tests taken off campus. The cost of medicines is only covered if you are hospitalized, or suffer from a serious disease, and are member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme.

 

B. Working in Norway

1. A student may work part-time for up to 20 hours per week when a work permit is granted. An application for a work permit should be accompanied by a statement from the institution confirming that the work will not affect the study progress. A letter from the employer stating that the student has a job offer must also be submitted.

2. Students are normally allowed to work full time during semester breaks.

3. Please note that the majority of institutions do not have on-campus work study schemes, and foreign students will have to compete on the regular job market.

4. Applications for a work permit may be submitted to the local police station in Norway

D. How to Apply to The University

1. Check with the departments to see if there is a closing date for your application.

2. You should write directly to the Institution's Admission Office for detailed application information and forms.

3. You can also download application form from university website.

4. Some universities have an on-line application facility.

5. Admission Office will inform you about the documentation, translation, and visa requirements.

5. You should start at least one year in advance to compile the necessary information and documentation.

6. The decision of the institution is usually announced within approximately six to eight months of the application deadline.

 

E. Supporting Documents

1. Completed Application Form.

2. Official English version of all educational certificates including marks sheets.

3. School/College leaving certificate.

4. English (TOEFL or IELTS) Language proficiency test documents

5. Photocopy of your passport.

 

F. Credit Transfer Facility

1. Students may apply for credit transfer program at undergraduate or postgraduate level in Norway.

2. The maximum amount of credit that may be granted normally is not greater than 50% of the course.

3. Most of the Norwegian universities consider minimum "B" grade for acceptance.

4. You have to submit the following documents

to your target university:

a. Your application form for the Undergraduate or Postgraduate coursework program

b. Official copies of your academic transcript

c. Also include an official letter from head of the school/department of your university, from where you have already completed the courses.

d. Detailed course outlines (Official Copy) including subject descriptions, methods of teaching and assessment, reading lists, number of hours of teaching etc.

e. The academic level you are studying (e.g. First Year, Second Year etc.)

f. How many credits you have completed

g. An explanation of the grading system used at your institution.

h. Information on the total units of study requirement ( i.e. how many credits are required) for the completion of the degree.
