1. What is TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) ?

TOEFL is a standardized test of English for academic purposes. It measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings. This program is used as a benchmark of proficiency in English for entrance requirements of different universities, colleges and institutions in the world.

2. Why TOEFL is Required?

In many countries TOEFL is a prerequisite program for admission into colleges and universities for non-native English speakers. Basically, the university you're applying to, wants to know that you know enough English to understand your courses and do well in school.

3. How to Register for TOEFL iBT?

A. Smart & Easier System

1. At first you have to visit TOEFL iBT Registration Page and open an account with ETS. Then you have to go to the following address with your User Name and Password information.

2. Fill up the TOEFL iBT Registration From available at VarsityAdmission.COM

3. Pay the Service Charge along with ETS Fee of $US150. More information about charge

4. Finally, you will get your exam confirmation at your email address and/or at your account within three days.

1. Download TOEFL iBT Registration Form or Get it from American Center at Banani.

2. Print the form and fill up it.

3. Make a bank draft in favor of ETS of $US150 from any bank of your choice.

4. Attach the bank draft with the TOEFL Scheduling Form.

For Bangladesh, the TOEFL iBT test fee is $US150.

8. How long is Score Valid?

1. TOEFL scores are valid for two years.

2. If you took the TOEFL test more than two years ago and need to submit scores to an agency or institution, you must take the test again to have your scores reported.

9. Syllabus/Test Content

The TOEFL Internet-based test consists of four sections. Information about each section is provided below:

A. Listening

B. Speaking

C. Reading

D. Writing

A. Listening Detail

Time: 60 to 90 minutes

Score scale: 0 to 30

Note taking allowed

1. Four to Six lectures, like classroom discussion. Each discussion is 3 to 5 minutes long and has 6 questions.

2. Two to Three conversations. Each conversation is 3 minutes long and has 5 questions.

B. Speaking Detail

Time: 20 minutes

Score scale: 0 to 4 points; total point is converted to 0 to 30 score scale.

1. It has Six tasks.

2. Two independent tasks about familiar topics. Test takers state, explain, and support their response using personal knowledge and experience

3. Two tasks based on Reading and Listening material.

a. Tasks include a short reading passage and a short talk (These are shorter than those in the Reading and Listening sections.)

b. Questions require test takers to combine information from both the reading and the listening material in the responses

c. One task is based on a campus-related situation, and the other is based on academic classroom material.

d. Test takers can take notes and use them to respond.

4. Two tasks based on Listening material, including a short lecture or conversation.

a. Questions require test takers to summarize key ideas from the talks in the responses

b. One task is based on a campus-related situation, and the other is based on academic classroom material.

c. Test takers can take notes and use them to respond.

5. Trained raters evaluate test takers' ability in:

a. Topic development - show they understand and can make connections, and convey relevant information

b. Delivery - use clear, smooth, sustained speech for overall intelligibility

c. Language use - demonstrate control of grammar and word choice, and respond coherently

C. Reading Detail

Time: 60 to 100 minutes

Score scale: 0 to 30

1. It has 3 to 5 academic reading passages followed by comprehension questions

2. Approximately 700 words long

3. Includes multiple-focus passages (compare/contrast, cause/effect)

4. 12 to 14 questions for each passage

5. Familiar question types like the computer-based TOEFL test

D. Writing Detail

Time: It takes 50 minutes. 20 minutes for integrated task and 30 minutes for independent task

Score scale: 0 to 5 points; total points converted to 0 to 30 score scale

1. It has 2 tasks

2. One integrated task - Write based on what is read and heard. Reading passage appears first, and then is removed from the screen during the lecture.

3. One independent task - Support an opinion on a topic.

10. What is the Standard Score for TOEFL iBT?

There is no standard score for TOEFL iBT. But, most of the Universities accept 79 to 80 score.

11. Rescheduling or Canceling Your Test Appointment

A. Rescheduling Policy

1. You must reschedule your registration no later than 3 full days before your appointment test date (not including the day of your test or the day of your request) or your test fee will be forfeited.

2. For example: Suppose, your test date is 23rd April, you have to reschedule your test on or before 19th April.

3. Payment must be received prior to rescheduling. The reschedule fee is $US50.

4. The fee for changing your test center is $US50

B. Cancellation Policy

1. You must cancel your registration no later than 3 full days before your appointment test date (not including the day of your test or the day of your request) or your test fee will be forfeited.

2. For example: Suppose, your test date is 23rd April, you have to cancel your test on or before 19th April.

3. You will get a partial refund of 50% of your test fee.

12. What to Bring to the Test Center

1. A valid original passport

2. Your registration number. You will get this when you register.

3. Note: If you arrive at the test center without the required documents mentioned above, the test center administrator will not admit you to the test and your test fee will be forfeited.
